詞根：pel = push 推
1. compel
助記：com(加強)+ pel(推，驅(qū)使)→一再驅(qū)使→強迫
釋義：v. 強迫，迫使
舉例：
Nothing can compel me to do such a thing.

2. expel
助記：ex(出)+ pel(推，驅(qū)使)→推出→驅(qū)逐
釋義：v. 驅(qū)逐，開除，排除，發(fā)射
舉例：
Russia has lately decided to expel a US diplomat from its land.
俄國最近驅(qū)逐了一名美國外交官。
3. impel
助記：im(在…內(nèi))+ pel(推，驅(qū)使)→內(nèi)在推動→激勵
釋義：v. 推動，推進(jìn)，激勵，驅(qū)使，逼迫
舉例：
He felt impelled to investigate further.

4. propel
助記：pro(向前)+ pel(推，驅(qū)使)→向前推→推進(jìn)
釋義：v. 推進(jìn)，驅(qū)使
舉例：
The tiny rocket is attached to the spacecraft and is designed to propel it toward Mars.
微型火箭附在宇宙飛船上，用來推進(jìn)飛船飛向火星。
5. repel
助記：re(反)+ pel(推，驅(qū)使)→向反方向推→擊退
釋義：v. 擊退，抵制，使厭惡
舉例：
They have fifty thousand troops along the border ready to repel any attack.
他們沿邊界有5萬軍隊，隨時準(zhǔn)備擊退任何進(jìn)攻。
