Economics attempts to understand and address many of the world’s mostserious problems. I would like to enhance my knowledge of the economic andsocial principles of global sustainable development, such as the divergencebetween rich and poor countries and how this links with the theories of growthso that I can help to alleviate the effects of these types of economicproblems.
I have enjoyed the macroeconomic side of the course and I am lookingforward to learning more about globalisation after reading The UndercoverEconomist by Harford as he argues that the benefits of globalisation outweighthe disadvantages, such as the “Race to the Bottom”. Furthermore, the articleGlobalisation Shakes the World by Schifferes brought context to Harford’s viewsby allowing me to understand the contrasting effects of globalisation onBangalore and Michigan. In general I enjoy keeping up with current economicaffairs and I am intrigued by the future effects of the recent migration ofrefugees from Syria into Europe and I am keen to understand whether this will beof benefit or burden to European economies.
I enjoy taking part in voluntary work such as my work experience in Ugandain August 20xx. The visit highlighted the countries many issues such as famine,poor infrastructure and the vast inequality between developed countries anddeveloping countries. This led me to read The Bottom Billion by Collier whichenabled me to gain a better understanding of the positions of the countries atthe bottom of the global economic system by explaining the four economic traps.This suggested that Uganda is a failing economy because it is landlocked by badneighbours, as well as recently being stuck in the conflict trap, from which ithas now escaped but is still at high risk of falling back into due to its lowincome and slow growth. The Bottom Billion also analyses the effectiveness ofglobal aid. This had lead me to research about how Britain’s overseas budget isspent and how the UN aims to deal with global poverty. I found the UN’s 17 newgoals regarding sustainable development and economic policy very ambitiousparticularly ending poverty and hunger globally and providing quality educationfor all by 20xx.
In March 20x I completed a Future Learn course about how genes influencecancer development. I found this very beneficial as it built on my knowledge ofgenetics and how this has been used to produce technological advances that mayeventually cure cancer. For this reason I am currently doing another onlinecourse about wealth and income inequality with the Open University. As anacademic scholar I thrive on opportunities for independent research and work,and these courses have allowed me to achieve these aims.
The subjects I have taken through to A Level have taught me valuableskills; Mathematics has developed my problem solving and data analysis skillsand studying Biology and Chemistry has allowed me to think critically andimprove my investigative skills. I am taking part in the Biology Olympiadcompetition which utilises knowledge gained from inside the A level course toanswer questions outside of the course curriculum.
I enjoy the challenge that leadership brings whether in the CommunityService unit visiting a local school or in my role as a School Prefect and Housecaptain which has meant I have learnt the importance of communication, teamworkand commitment. Furthermore, I have chosen to become an academic mentor whichincludes tutoring younger students. Whilst maintaining a strong academic recordI also participate in School hockey and netball teams and I have decided to takepart in the Young Enterprise scheme this year to improve my understanding of thebusiness world.
I have greatly enjoyed the challenges that I have encountered so far and Ilook forward to focusing my learning on a subject that I find intellectuallystimulating and which will provide me a range of career opportunities

(1)Resume
大多數(shù)同學(xué)都喜歡把時(shí)間花在PS上,而不是很看重Resume。站在學(xué)校招生委員會(huì)的角度想一下,就知道為什么Resume是申請(qǐng)過(guò)程中所必需的了。面對(duì)那么多份申請(qǐng)材料,評(píng)審委員會(huì)不會(huì)一開(kāi)始就拿出你的PS進(jìn)行研讀,尤其是我們中國(guó)人寫的巨篇PS。他們通常的做法應(yīng)該是先看Resume,有什么感興趣的地方,才可能翻讀你的PS。所以,Resume要出你自己出彩的地方。最具實(shí)施性的一種就是按照類別將近幾年自己所取得的成績(jī)或進(jìn)步一一列出。同時(shí)還要注意,Resume要寫得簡(jiǎn)潔,最好限制在一張紙以內(nèi)。
(2)PS
PS的全稱為Personal Statement,或者Statement of Purpose/Objectives。我更傾向于后一種,因?yàn)椋魧W(xué)文書(shū)的.價(jià)值在于向?qū)W校展示你的研究水平,或者更全面地說(shuō),就是說(shuō)服學(xué)校你就是他們需要招收的人才。也可以這么說(shuō),PS其實(shí)就是Resume的展開(kāi)。在動(dòng)筆寫PS之前,你應(yīng)該認(rèn)真想一下學(xué)校究竟想招收什么樣的人才,對(duì)人才要求的素質(zhì)有哪些,怎樣才能以最精簡(jiǎn)的筆墨最強(qiáng)有力的說(shuō)服學(xué)校:我就是你們要找的人!記住一點(diǎn),學(xué)校招學(xué)生就像我們?nèi)ベ?gòu)物一樣,不是要最好的,而是要最合適的。所以,你完全沒(méi)有必要在PS上把自己吹得完美無(wú)缺,只要揚(yáng)長(zhǎng)避短就可以了。當(dāng)然可以在PS里面有適當(dāng)?shù)目鋸,但是這種夸張應(yīng)該往深里說(shuō),而不能往寬里說(shuō)。舉個(gè)例子,你可以把自己的工作寫得更深刻一些,但是不能把別人的工作也攬到自己身上。不要怕沒(méi)有成果,研究經(jīng)歷不是因?yàn)橛衟aper發(fā)表才有價(jià)值的,尤其是本科生,有paper固然給申請(qǐng)?zhí)砑恿撕芏鄤偎,但是能有幾個(gè)人本科階段就能發(fā)表paper呢?研究經(jīng)歷不要寫得太詳細(xì),否則篇幅太長(zhǎng),別人不愿意看,但也不能太簡(jiǎn)單,否則沒(méi)有可信性。另外,單單羅列研究經(jīng)歷也并不可取,要在每個(gè)經(jīng)歷后面附加一點(diǎn)感想,就是在此之后自己有哪些方面的提高,無(wú)論是實(shí)驗(yàn)技術(shù)上的,還是專業(yè)基礎(chǔ)知識(shí)上的。這樣會(huì)讓人更覺(jué)得你是個(gè)可造之材。
PS里面完全沒(méi)必要專門費(fèi)筆墨寫自己的思想品質(zhì)是如何如何得好,這完全可以在你的研究經(jīng)歷里面反映出來(lái)。教授是對(duì)你每周日去敬老院作義工感興趣,還是對(duì)你在實(shí)驗(yàn)室里廢寢忘食感興趣?至于獲得過(guò)什么獎(jiǎng)勵(lì)?除非與專業(yè)掛鉤可以寫在Resume里(PS里就沒(méi)必要了),否則還是省點(diǎn)力氣吧。
(3)推薦信
三封推薦信,可以選三個(gè)職位不同的老師,能從三個(gè)不同的角度反映你的形象,再加上你的PS,這樣你整個(gè)人在學(xué)校招生委員會(huì)那里的形象就立體了。比如,實(shí)驗(yàn)室的導(dǎo)師,一個(gè)專業(yè)課老師,再加一個(gè)實(shí)驗(yàn)課老師。這樣的選擇并不是非常立體,三位推薦人有角色重疊的部分,如果你經(jīng)歷豐富一些,選擇可以更立體一點(diǎn)。但找推薦人的一個(gè)最基本原則不能變:保證推薦信的開(kāi)頭部分能說(shuō)明你和推薦人的關(guān)系足夠熟悉,能讓他為你寫出一封可靠的推薦信。推薦信也應(yīng)該以專業(yè)內(nèi)容為主,并且與你的PS相符,不要出現(xiàn)自相矛盾的地方。但內(nèi)容上最好大事件相符,小事件不要重復(fù),抓住這個(gè)機(jī)會(huì),借推薦信更有力地推銷自己。

1、突出重點(diǎn)

It is my conviction that the meaning of life does not dwell in the length of time that one can live or the material abundance that one can acquire, but in the richness and the wonderfulness of life itself. With the increase of my age, many things in my life have changed. But one thing remains constant, that is, I will consistently insist on doing what I like to do and hope that my endeavors can be valuable to the life of others. I see this as the only way whereby I can realize the value of my life.
My undergraduate study focused on economics and I achieved remarkable scholastic performance in this field. My GPA is 3.44(my GRE score is 20xx and TOEFL----)。 For four consecutive years of my undergraduate study, I received scholarships for my distinguished academic performance. Due to my equally prominent performance in extracurricular activities I was conferred on the Outstanding Student in Campus Activities. However, honestly speaking, my real interest lies not in economics, but in education. Ever since I was a primary school student, I had cherished a strong desire for a teaching career exemplified by my teachers. In the actual teaching career that I embarked on upon my graduating from university, I have become increasingly aware that the existing educational conditions in China are far from satisfactory. The backward teaching methodology and the prevailing pedagogical ideology have rendered Chinese education out of place with the modern international development in education. On the macro level, the current education theory and practice in China lag significantly behind advanced countries in the West. For instance, though education via the internet has achieved considerable development in past two years, in practical operation such education has more often than not deteriorated into an extended form of the conventional examination-oriented education instead of a really interactive process. In my personal experience, despite the fact that some of the problems that I have encountered in my teaching career can be solved by consulting relevant technical literature, I have found that the more serious flaws inherent in China's current educational system cannot be worked out easily. Under such circumstances, an advanced program in education becomes necessary.
In this age of information, traditional education, both in its ideology and methodology, has met unprecedented challenge like many other aspects of human existence. Meanwhile, the pursuit for higher levels of educational development and of the quality of life has largely transformed the educational value orientation of the general public. The educational model that is centered around the cognitive and intellectual instruction has been seriously questioned. Greater attention has been devoted to the cultivation of well-developed personality and to the ontological status of the individual in education. Such issues as the internal studies of education science, scientific decision-making in education, and meta-education have also been increasingly emphasized upon. There have also been innovations in educational research methodology. The tendency has been to combine modern technology with humanistic research categories and with naturalistic research categories, and to organically integrate qualitative descriptions with quantitative descriptions. It is also important to carry out educational experimentations in which educational predictions are complemented by educational feedbacks. Both the complexity of education and the complexity of human individuals have made the comprehensive application of diverse educational approaches necessary. Those new horizons are what fascinate me.
In view of the following qualifications that I have acquired, I believe that I will acquit myself satisfactorily in the prospective Ph.D. program in education that I am currently endeavoring to apply for. First and foremost, as is often claimed, one's interest is one's best director. I believe that I will do well what I am really interested in doing. Secondly, though I majored in economics as an undergraduate, my trainings during that stage helped develop effective modes of thinking and research approaches. In addition, I conscientiously self-studied many works related to education, including A Developmental History of Educational Science in the West, which enabled me to construct a solid groundwork for more advanced studies in this field. Next, it can be safely asserted that education and economics are not entirely separated. For example, it is necessary to apply many statistical methods in educational psychology and my academic record indicates that statistics is the subject that I am most good at. Last but not the least, my current teaching career and my teaching experience will play a positive role in facilitating my target degree program.
The reason why I apply for the University of -- is that it is the first state university with a time-honored history. The School of Education in this university is quite prominent among its counterparts in the field. On the other hand, all the accomplished educators since the 1960's have been well-versed in psychology. Almost every important new educational theory is derived psychological findings in one way or another so that educational psychology has subsequently developed into a fundamental subject for the science of education. The tendency in the 21st century is to emphasize on the micro research of educational activities and against this backdrop educational psychology will be attached greater importance. In Instructional Technology, I would like to focus on the following studies: how to improve educational efficiency by applying research results from natural sciences and engineering technology; how to explore the combination and coordination of pedagogical contents and to improve teaching methodology by exploiting the theoretical findings from psychology and educational science concerning the process of teaching and learning. In Educational Psychology, I will concentrate on applied cognition and development, gifted and creative education, genetics and children development, personality structure and individual differences and other related subjects.
For me, to shift from economics to education and to pursue an advanced degree in the United States is not so much a challenge as an opportunity. At present, major reforms are being introduced into virtually every important aspect of Chinese society. The field of education especially calls for comprehensive reforms. Knowing where one is heading during navigation brings assured happiness. Asa student majoring in Computer Software, I began my odyssey four years ago. Now,after the initial mysticism was gradually unveiled, my curiosity remains thesame. Indeed, having entered this splendid computer world, I am more than greedyfor something new.
From the beginning of my study, my endeavor was fixed on the underlyingbranches of Computer Science, particularly System Software development. Novelapplications on other’s platform may be fruitful, but I think it’s moreappealing to act as an independent “manager”. In fact, mathematics, OS, DBMS andmodern compiler are all the examples, any breakthrough of which would pushforward the whole industry. Individuality is achieved in this uniqueposition.
My paces toward this goal are always steady. As mathematics permeates tothe every corner of Computer Science, I am eager to see how it functions. I tookcourses offered by the Mathematics Department including Mathematical Analysisand Advanced Algebra. The curriculum also covered Discrete Mathematics,Probability & Statistics and Theoretical Computer Science. As supplement tomy scope of knowledge, I learn by myself Combination Mathematics and the Scienceof Programming. This really made a hard period of time, but the harvest wasrewarding. I come to understand that even the most irrelevant softwaredisciplines have the origins in common. The importance of Fractured Geometry inComputer Graphics is already obvious. What if a step furthers toward TSP or BinPacking? Immeasurable. Then came my favorite topics: Operating System, Compilerand Database. I worked hard and derived bits of my own insight. In fact, I wasgreatly encouraged to find some of my ideas successfully implemented in thecorresponding course projects. My final grade is straight “As” in these coursed.In short, although my experience in Computer Science is still limited, I believeits depth is well accessible. As my advisor, Prof. Fang Yu, put it figurativelyin one of his lectures: “ It makes no difference whether a hunter captures 5 or7 rabbits. What counts is he knows how to use his gun.”
I think I can be the qualified shooter now. in my undergraduate years, Ihave earned various kinds of scholarships, among which were “Peking UniversityFellowship” and “Excellent Academic Scholarship”. My overall GPA ranks upper 10%among 48 students of the same grade. Because of my satisfactory performance, Iwas granted the honor of entering the graduate program at Peking Universitydirectly, waived of the admission test. Of all the sub-areas of Computer Science, my major interest is parallelprocessing and the related compiler construction. The terminology of parallelprocessing came to me when I read an article about digital circuit testing.According to this article, there exist many serial approaches of solving theautomatic test pattern generation (ATPG) problem. Though certain method ofsolving ATPG sometimes proved efficient, the computation time for a method ofsolving ATPG sometimes proved efficient, the computation time for a completeresult is intolerable, the a parallel processing machine is proposed. Usingparalleled ATPG method, this NP complete dilemma is ingeniously handled. Afterreading, I surprisingly realized that parallel processing opened a new windowfor the computationally intensive problems, which prove intractable for the VONNEUMANN Architecture. You can always first split a specific computational taskinto several independent divisions, then assign each part to a certainprocessor. With reasonable partition and proper synchronization, most gruelingscientific applications can be reduced to normal scale problems.
With the advent of the multiprocessor architecture, compiler optimizationfaced a new challenge. A compiler not only has to translate, but it is alsoresponsible for generating parallel-processing loop provides a rich opportunityof exploiting parallelism. Therefore, finding an optimum strategy for loopsbecause a hot research topic. On the whole, parallelism changes our view towardthe conventional computer architecture so that the compiler’s construction mustmake the corresponding modification. Because of this challenging characteristic,I choose them to be my interest of future study.
Yet parallel processing is far from maturity. It has been observed thatsome sequential algorithms can be easily translated into fast parallelalgorithms while some others may not. Is every sequential computation can bedone efficiently in parallel? If not, what properties result in suchdistinction? Another unsettled problem is programming parallel computers now islike programming serial computers in the 1960s. Programmers get locked into aparticular manufacturer’s computers. Is it possible for us to design a higherlevel language for parallel computers that hides the underlying machinearchitecture from users? Both are crying out for solution.
Without advanced knowledge, I can do nothing but wait. In order to convertmy undergraduate study into full play, graduate education is a necessity. Fromthe college guide and my advisor’s recommendation, I am pleased to learn thatyour department has an academic atmosphere where originality is appreciated andindividual potential is explored. It will be the best place for my specializedstudy. If possible, my main interest in the future will be in the followingareas:
Parallel processing, Compiler construction.
Distributed/concurrent systems, Operating system.
Machine learning, Automated fault diagnosis.

Having been fortunate enough to learn French and German from the age of 6,I decided to further my knowledge of French, and in 20xx I spent 3 months inParis. Knowledge of another language and country has given me an insight intothe French culture; I am grateful to have had the experience living with aFrench family, and creating a very personal connection with the country. I alsospent two weeks there over the summer, once again with a family, having lessons,and finally performing a fairy tale in French.

My love ofsinging led me to the Hertfordshire County Youth Choir, where I have learned tolook at singing not only as an enjoyment but also as a discipline; combining apassion with structure and focus. I think that learning a musical instrument hashelped me greatly in bringing discipline and structure to all my studies.
I have been an active participant in several school productions, playingHamlet, Eliza in My Fair Lady, Hester in A Woman of No Importance. I enjoycommunicating my own interpretation of characters to an audience, and appreciatethe different perspective it has given me in addition to textual analysis.
I look forward to the challenges the degree will give me and theresponsibility and independence of university life. I also anticipate theopportunity I may have to study abroad with great excitement! By continuing mystudy of literature and language I hope to be able to discover more about theway in which people communicate and further my knowledge of the historicalelements of literature and language, enhancing my ability to better understandthe views and feelings of others – and ultimately myself.
